What I got here is the first space-ambient album by Dutch music producer Jornt Elzing (using the 猫 シ Corp moniker -meaning something like Cat System Corp to release his music), who already impressed me various years back with the sonic gem “Building a Better World”. The initial ideas for “Blueberries on Mars” emerged already in 2020 when Jornt was asked to make a ‘simple repetitive soundtrack’ for a children’s book project. Children learn another language in books and then hear on Spotify the music in which words from the story repeat every 20 seconds. The story is about a group of critters who discover all kinds of new creatures and planets in space. Although the commissioned project fell through in the end, all work that had been done using hardware synths, digital synths, and field recordings was expanded further in the following years. All efforts and perseverance winded down to a 51-minute/10-track immersive, off-world ambient landscape of sweeping, non-rhythmic soundscapes incorporating dreamlike environments, futuristic spaces, and captivating otherworldly vistas. On each track of “Blueberries on Mars”, an enchanting, lush as well as mysterious-flavored cosmic ambient expanse opens up, taking the listeners’ mind gently into another reality and dimension. The atmospheres become even more profound and fascinating around the half of the release with “Comet Herding”, “Stars Blinking” and the beautifully rendered “Shores of Orion”. The galactic journey though isn’t over yet as there’s an unlisted 11th track: “Blueberries on Mars (Deep Space Colony Remix)”, a gracious 13-minute cosmic floater. Personally, I would have loved more of these lengthier pieces to experience full sonic immersion. Still, this release is well done. |
