“Decayed Society” is a work of haunting, elegy-like ambient by Samuel Wood (aka Sam KDC) and James Clements (aka ASC) that’s “loosely based around the events of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster”, a theme that easily could have led to a rather bleak, bland and rather oppressive sounding recording. Well, it doesn’t, but the listener should still expect thoughtful, immersive, and slightly dystopian aural worlds complemented and expanded by fascinating environmental soundings. A desolate, grainy-ish and dark sonic edge is present in the nearly 60-minute ambient work (especially on the first three tracks, which are the toughest) along a deep, melancholic sphere shimmering almost constantly through the veins of dense yet misty, textural pads and drones. The dystopian, subterranean landscape reaches a new level from “Block 4” onward, giving way to slow unfolding sonic currents of meandering beauty and surreal aural cinema. Here, calm and restlessness as well as desolation along subtle currents of eeriness are a constant factor in the slow morphing and shifting atmospheres of delicious darkness, while rays of light offer a sense of release on the mesmerizing “Skala” and the final track “No Safety Zone”. It won’t be a surprise the aforementioned is all best experienced through focussed listening using a good pair of headphones. Rest to say “Decayed Society” is a must-listen for fans of deep atmospheric electronic music. |
