The idea for this album emerged while Javi Cánovas and Miguel Justo were improvising at a couple of meetings. It made them realize they could actually record a full album almost in one go without losing the magic of music created in the moment. “Submúltiplo” ended up containing four of those inspired pieces, of which the last two (the title track and “Uxem”) were the result of a jam session. Opener “Long Way”, based initially on the Phrygian scale, makes an imaginative but not too strong piece visualizing a Gypsy caravan on an extensive road sequencer patterns which turn the piece in a dynamic and captivating exercise. The enthralling and spiraling sequencial energy of the previous piece continues nicely on the 10-minute title track, where the “Ricochet” atmosphere also passes by briefly. All energy has trip. Mid and fast-tempo sequencers run underneath lush floating textures along an occasional solo. “Particle” starts out with mellow mellotron sounds, soon replaced by spatial (Berlin-School spiced) evaporated on the first eight minutes of 19-minute “Uxem”, where things submerge beautifully in quiet, sedate textural realms. From there, ensembles of spicy, multi-layered sequencers and assorted vintage pads start building another power engine in the tradition of ARC with a most pleasant sonic ebb and flow. It’s the highlight of the release. With “Submúltiplo”, Cánovas and Justo prove they’re not a one-day fly but a serious contendor in retro-inspired, sequencer-based EM. |
