From this album on, Dutch EM-band Beyond Berlin has become a trio seeing Oscar van den Wijngaard joining Martin Peters and Rene de Bakker on their fine sonic journeys into vintage aural landscapes. Their 60-minute “Totem” is a melodic, sequencer-driven and emotive recording lacking almost any soloing. It embraces the warm ambience and overall sonic imprint of classic Berlin School music but transported into the here and now. Besides a gentle pace it’s the mellowness, soft glowing nature and transparent sounddesign found in each of the five tracks that makes listening to “Totem” such an enjoyable one, finding its peak on the captivating, almost longing “Andante”. Well done, guys! |
