Brian Vassallo – Flashback

In 1999 this Maltese musician released the very nice atmospheric space album “Beyond”.

His new album “Flashback” chooses a new direction as the music (all tracks were composed in 2001) deals with chill-out, more upbeat stuff. “Senses” is a good opener which sends regards to Kraftwerk, followed by the nice “Changes”.
“Love Café” is a weak effort, sounding rather empty and superficial, which also goes for “Trust” and “Wonders”. It’s obvious the tracks lack more and more compositional strength while the album progresses.
“New Sunrise” is a bit better, but the solo seems as pointless as in former tracks.

No, the music on “Flashback” sounds disappointing to my ears, something the concluding chill-out track “Hope” can’t change.
