From the start of the 38-minute “Piano Textures 5”, moods are sensitive, lush and elegant while a lovely sense of optimism and freedom takes off and spreads its wings gently on each of the 11 introspective tone poems. The melodic, airy outcome merges prepared piano with sophisticated electronics, pads as well as some smooth string textures to a thoughtful, cohesive whole that also reveals traces of minimalism occasionally. I personally felt a soft spot for the opening piece as well as the somber, slightly melancholic “X” and the ethereal, spacy outro “XI”. I’m also aware the more varied character of “Piano Textures 5” may not be ticking all the preferred boxes for fans of the genre. |
