Deutsche Wertarbeit – Deutsche Wertarbeit
LP/CD, Sky Records/Bureau B, 1981

When we talk about German electronic Krautrock, one shouldn’t overlook the instrumental, hypnotic/rhythmic synth music of Deutsche Wertarbeit. This solo-project by Dorothea Raukes, who’s better known as leading member of the band Streetmark, was one of the few female characters within the German progressive rock scene.

The same-titled album offers pleasant synth-pop and simple melodic tunes blending elements of the Düsseldorfer School (e.g. Kraftwerk, Cluster, Harmonia) and the classic Berlin School (Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze) intelligently while fans of Wolfgang Riechman’s “Wunderbar” should also keep this one in mind. The best track on “Deutsche Wertarbeit” is without doubt the positive tune “Intercity Rheingold”.

A strange fact remains the rather cold and abstract metallic album cover that doesn’t match with the hypnotizing, emotive and warm textures featured on the six tracks. Bureau-B re-released the recording on cd in 2014.
