A Gibson Les Paul custom guitar and a few pedals. These were the tools Dirk Serries applied solely in creating the music for “The Origin Reversal”. The music of the latter attempts to hail back to the sound of the vidnaObmana releases from the end of the ’80’s and early ’90’s. The five pieces, each clocking over 10 minutes and recorded in real-timedirectly to a stereo 2-track, all enter an unhurried, introspective and spacious realm without getting meditative. Although I don’t doubt Mr Serries serious intention and mature musical skills, the gentle flowing current of sedate e-guitar textures can’t compete with the impact, tender glowing and warm synthesized ambient soundscapes of the vidna times referred to by the composer. For that, the sound design simply contains too much blurr and distortive-infused pads merged and/or lined up next to each other. |
