“Different Spaces” (featuring music in memory of the composer’s late sister) is a double album by skilled Norwegian multi-instrumentalist Erik Wøllo that sees him skillfully execute his minimalist-emotive music. Once again, the blend of various guitars, gentle sequencers, haunting synth pads, and assorted percussion is immaculate as we are transported to imaginary, dreamy, and hypnotizing realms somewhere out there. Repeated rhythmic patterns are set to work together sophisticatedly with hints of tonal, searing melodic elements above layers of pastel-textured atmospheres, but still, no chord is present. As once remarked by Mr. Wøllo, each of his compositions kind of feels a specific living breathing organism, like a state of mind. And that’s exactly is what is felt throughout and over and over again during the album’s 2 hours and 45 minute duration. Soulful, intimate, mesmerizing as well as reflective ambiences, Erik paints them all in an impressive, captivating manner. Well done, Erik! |
