Ok, let’s journey back to the year 1996. Floating Point is the English trio Alan Gubby, Rod Mansell, and Nick Westwood who, on “Between Worlds”, opt for an extraordinarily interesting form of free-spirited instrumental electronic music with various chill-out hints in which bass and guitars are also used sideways, and in which rhythms play an important part. Their original musical approach yields 73 minutes of music with both feet on the ground and brims with inventiveness and self-confidence, which in itself commands respect. The alternating use of drums, percussion, and samples make their music exhilarating and catchy, but also quite unpredictable. In track 5 (“Quick and Dirty Fix”), for instance, things get pretty crazy and psychedelic, even featuring a harmonica. The following track “Juju” is also pretty uplifting, almost dance-like with vocoder vocals in the background and later Roach-like guitar solos. Overall, both the unusual approach and rhythmic use in tracks 2 to 4 remind me of the up-tempo work of the illustrious Dutch duo Syndrone. It is therefore audibly undeniable that this trio has the better gear, and knows how to handle it very expertly. In addition, the sound quality and production of this self-managed CD are excellent without a doubt, not to mention the cleverly chosen stereo image and the good dose of low in the music. Check it out if you’re looking for something out of the ordinary, I reckon.
