Forrest Fang – The Wolf at the Ruins / Migration
CD/DIGITAL DOWNLOAD, Projekt Records, 2013

The last couple of years, quite some re-releases of older out-of-print albums have seen the light of day. This happened as single or combined packages of the works by Steve Roach or Robert Rich.

The US Projekt label hereby presents a limited edition 2-CD reissue of 300 copies of Forrest Fang’s “The Wolf At The Ruins” (1989) and “Migration” (1986), both originally released on Mr Fang’s private Ominous Thud-label. For the occasion, they have been fully remastered by Robert Rich and include two bonus tracks per album.

The classically trained multi-instrumentalist and composer Forrest Fang hereby presents his own ingenious way of blending acoustic and electronic instruments, ending up in a complex collage of hypnotic minimalism, samples and a multitude of earthy poly-rhythms with a Far Eastern bent. The influences of Gamelan folk music are evident on “The Wolf At The Ruins”, which is also notable for its sophisticated use of Oriental percussion, the ones used for leading and guiding the music. On” Silent Fields” though, the spherical, non-rhythmic synth pads gently flow along.

“Migration” on the other hand, where Forrest plays polyphonic synthesizers, piano, violin, tape (delay techniques), and lute, starts out as key world music with classical influences and less minimal traces. In the second half of this album we find more electronic and more quiet tracks such as the ethereal “Before Sunrise”, the atmospheric “Gradual Formation in Sand” or the lovely “Lowland Dream” with gamelan soundings. The final piece though sounds rather disarranged and chaotic.

Of this whole package, “The Wolf At The Ruins” has the best papers and is the most convincing.
