Painting emotive nocturnal cityscapes before the mind’s eye is what “City Never Sleeps” is all about. Its storyline is about a young country boy who moves to a big city after getting the job of his dreams there. Life in that city though turns out to be quite different from what he had expected it would be. The outcome -made up of 16 shorter tracks fusing symphonic sounds, grand piano, and various sequences- proves an imaginative, highly evocative work filled with lots of warm, embracing sounds and pads addressing various moods, encounters, and feelings found as we submerge in the cityscape. The opening tracks are very nicely rendered and promising already. There are a couple of lively scenes such as the beautifully sequenced “Back to Work”, “The New Neighbour” or “An Unexpected Birthday Party” but my personal feeling is that Gert is at his best when he sticks to soundscaping with various broadening textures with little or no rhythmic components. These (often) also are the spots where sweet melancholy slumbers just beneath the surface or lurks around the corner. Simply close your eyes and be carried away. Well done, Gert! Overall rating: between 3.5 and 4 stars. |
