Following in the footsteps of the critically acclaimed and very well-received triple cd releases “Galaxis” and “Lost Tracks” it still must have been a huge challenge for Gert Emmens & Ruud Heij to put out this 6-CD box. Both known for their excellent musical skills as well as various collaborative projects, Gert and Ruud once again express traditional Berlin School-inspired electronic music created with a large assortment of vintage synths. Loads of beautiful, warm, and highly emotive synth pads paired with captivating sequencer patterns are all over the place on the 36 tracks, ranging between 9 and 20 minutes in duration. And there’s even some well-done acoustic drumming by Gert in there if one takes notice. I truly love the descriptive, picturesque nature found in their music pieces (like “Daybreak” or “Vision of Endless Lowlands”) next to captivating sonic paths taken on e.g. “Into the Nexus” and “In Search of the Future”. Simply put, fans of their previous albums as well as the aforementioned boxes simply can’t go wrong with the very neat “On Higher Ground”. Next to the regular release – containing over 7½ hours of sparkling music – , the duo also offers its audience an 88-minute download-only edition through their Bandcamp site with alternate versions of six tracks, all different due to additions, other instrumentation, or a different mix for only a few euro. Chapeau guys for his big, most enjoyable effort!
