“Mysterious Events”, the duos 15th album to date, is another 3-CD set by the very talented Dutch musicians Gert Emmens & Ruud Heij of which the sonic content is recognizable immediately as theirs. Their mellow as well as attentive sound design is all over the place and doesn’t differ from what we’ve been accustomed to, featuring a large array of warm synth/mellotron pads, well-tempered sequences, lush rhythms along the occasional addition of acoustic drums, a solo voice or some e-guitar bits. The expert blending of the aforementioned and sophisticate layering of pads results in lots of emotional resonance in the overall relaxed, tasty, and atmospheric paintings. The continuous 73-minute “Bermuda Triangle” filling the second disc for sure is a tantalizing, and in-depth piece of work while I also count the emotive, choir-based soundscape “Marfa Lights” and the mysterious-flavored soundscape “Atlantis” among my favorites on this (again) well-accomplished and recommended release. |
