This classic space music recording by Nashville-based synthesist Giles Reaves is one of those milestones that can stand the test of time for decades, as it still sounds fresh and inspiring after all these years. After the immense success of Giles debut-album “Wunjo”, Stephen Hill of Hearts of Space was asking about re-releasing “Wunjo”, but after that didn’t work out, Reaves sent him some new music he had been working on. The actual music of the album came from many different sources. “After the falls” was actually a live in the studio improvisation, while the next piece “Submerged” started with a guitar part that Giles friend Rob McClain played to which effects were added. Reaves then wrote a piano part, added e-bow guitar and more synths. The final piece “Suspended… on a sea of Glass” started with an old tape Reaves finally found a use for. He ran the tape through a mini-moog and used the outcome as the bed for the rest of the song, which included a sound that came up (and played by Giles) on his Matrix-6 keyboard when he turned it on one day. “Sea of Glass” breaths a sense of magic, heartfelt emotion, and a beautiful feel of yearning through its encompassing music, ending up in an endless flow with the velvet textures “Suspended… on a sea of Glass”. |
