What I got here is a rather unusual recording despite being electronic ambient. “In uno spazio immense” (In a huge space) is a release by Italian producers/musicians Grand River (aka Aimée Portioli) and Abul Mogard that’s best pinpointed as a dramatic ambient drone with a distinct nod to post-punk. “Dissolvi” and “Altrove, Iontano” are made up of gentle pads and undulating chord progressions while the moving masses of raw power and storm surging pads on “Frantumi di luci” turn out more gritty, a sonic blast to my ears. The latter also applies to “Archi” which starts quiet but shifts to pure post-punk blackness as walls of distorted guitar textures surface and progress dramatically, building momentum. Vast impressionist, hallucinogenic, and transportive ambient sound worlds take off on “Sulle barcane” which proves better to digest, as well as the smooth, brief outro. Falling a bit out of my league, “In uno spazio immense” is a peculiar and intense 45-minute trip into the great expanse that (I imagine) is best taken in with a decent pair of headphones. |
