Harold Budd – The White Arcades

“The White Arcades” is the follow-up to Harold Budd’s critically acclaimed album “Lovely Thunder”, offering 42 minutes of soothing ambient bliss.

Especially the opening (title) track and the following two pieces already show why this work still stands the test of time: the stunning beauty and stillness captured with sustained piano and warm electronic textures evoke a sincere sense of remoteness and tranquillity, creating an overall moving and relaxed atmosphere to wander through.
Liquid velvet might even be an appropriate description to the reflective, slow morphing soundings of “The Child with the Lion”.

Although the following pieces don’t meet the same high standard of the first three, the hypnotizing piano melodies and vocal sound pads all reflect a kindred sense of pleasant remoteness, meandering forth over a landscape of a dream.

The timeless classic “The White Arcades” is ambient chill-out at its best.
