Interstellar Data Unit (whose wish is to expand the imagination of humanity) is space ambient exploring our solar system and beyond. It was all created by a skilled musician who prefers to stay anonymous for the time being. The project was actually born out of a profound love for planetary science and astrophysics, and the composer being captured by sci-fi movies and the American “The Expanse” series in particular. The latter series received a positive critical response, with specific praise for its visuals, character development, and political narrative. Seeing all the movies at the time as well, the idea popped up for the Star ship series, where each track refers to a fictional Starship. Each one is unique, even the engine’s sound and interior comms sound effects are different. As the aforementioned as well as the album title already suggest, the listener should imagine a 30 – 40 year journey in a Starship and the vast distances to travel while immersing into the 10-track/1 hour and 47-minute outcome making up “Crossing the Heliosphere”. The cosmic soundscapes – accompanied occasionally by subtle sequencing along communication sounds, robotics, and effects- are calm, gentle, and minimalist while resonating pleasantly as they pass by. As the cosmic drift spirals onward steadily but surely, they on and off wander into ethereal spheres like on “Titan Port after Ceres” and the nearly 13-minute title piece with its soft sparkling bell sounds. The three Starship pieces -each clocking over 10 minutes each- are actually impressionist soundscapes with only slices of drones/textures grabbing the atmosphere on board those huge vehicles while they float through the galactic expanse. The space journey deepens further in the final three pieces, where the listener is drifting slowly onward weightless and effortlessly as soft glowing cosmic scenery passes by before the mind’s eye. Overall, the transportive outcome of this project is unusual, offering a different sonic approach towards space flight, colonization of the solar system, and interplanetary travel. Rating: between 3.5 and 4 stars. |
