With his second album “Surrender”, ambient composer James Johnson presents an even smoother sound compared to his debut “Unity”. The outcome is a nice introspective album that combines elements of Liquid Mind, Brian Eno, Jeff Pearce and kindred spirits. “Surrender” takes the listener into a quiet environment of somewhat melancholic soundtextures almost devoid of melody or structures, which make it a perfect companion for meditation and relaxation. The 28-minute album opener “She will shift you” sets things into a slow motion, gradually unfolding its sonic beauty. In the second track “Remembrance”, some intimate Harold Budd-like piano complements the smooth, gently curling music. The nearly 20-minute title track closes the album. Again, there’s no distinct melody, as things dwell further into melancholic realms. I absolutely recommend “Surrender” for those who love the soundworlds of the aformentions musicians. Mr Johnson re-issued the album in January 2016 as a download. |
