For “Subtracted Soundscapes”, featuring electronic music moving fluidly between the naturalistic and the slightly otherworldly, accomplished Swedish composer/producer Johan Agebjörn revisited past work, though with a strong focus on calmness and serenity as well as envisioning an outcome that’s entirely beatless. The sonic threads of the original tracks have been meticulously unraveled and rewoven while simultaneously turning them into something warmer, quieter, and introspective than the original compositions. Johan describes the remixing process for the 52-minute album as “leaving only the key elements of the music, and also working with different combinations of lowpass-filtering, slowing down, adding reverb, and mixing the music differently.” Well, emotive atmospheres and warm synth pads are most certainly on the menu here as we’re taken into the evocative, gentle evolving sonic vastness on each of the eight tracks (of which two feature wordless female vocals). The subtracted version of “Zero Gravitation”, the final piece on the recording, makes some exquisite space music taking the listener into the floating environs of the great beyond. As could be expected from any release from this quality label, “Subtracted Soundscapes” features some immaculate production, mixing & mastering. Rating: between 3.5 and 4 stars.
