Kurtz Mindfields’ “Flying Again” is the follow-up to “Flying from Berlin To Paris” as well as the result of a desire on the part of Stephen Ingrand, maker of the NRSynth synthesizer clones, to produce an album that would fit next to Tangerine Dream’s output from the mid-’70s and start of the ’80s. In that period, the arrival of rhythm boxes synchronized with powerful Moog synthesizers and access to large polyphonic synthesizers changed the band’s music and paved the way for the advent of instrumental electro-rock/pop. Well, the outcome -presented in the form of a collector’s vinyl- refers to the Berlin School music of “Exit”, “White Eagle” and “Tangram”, recordings all using rather the same synths, either original or cloned to stick to and recreate the ambiance of that particular era. Guest artist Sébastien Moumon of MoS-Lab (who specializes in building modular and Moog modules) also joined the project, bringing his fine machines and experience. Next to TD’s aforementioned releases, the overall mood of this strong tribute release sticking to the spirit of this pioneering era also revisits the music Tangerine Dream presented on both “Encore” and “Stratosphere”. Make sure you pick a copy of “Flying Again” if you’re fond of it and still get goosebumps in the realm of the TD epoch mentioned. Rating: between 3.5 and 4 stars. |
