Anyone wanting to try a not-too-hard-hitting album of dark ambient should give the (second) cd by Letum, aka Swede Mattias Hendriksson, a try. Letum, which besides death also seems to be some god from the underworld, manages for 50 minutes to set a dreary, monastic and introspective atmosphere that is already introduced with the Gothic-like cd cover. Apart from the album’s rather industrial opening, the atmosphere on the rest of the album is cold and mysterious but oddly accessible. Neoclassical motifs, choral as well as ambient sounds are interwoven with dense soundscapes and lingering sounds without sounding too stuffy anywhere either. Music best taken in through headphones in a darkened room, or even better, a basement…. |
