For his fourth Llyn Y Cwn release, musician Ben Powell created another set of freeform dark ambient tracks based around a field recording supposed to represent the conditions at Llyn Y Cwn (a small lake in the Glyder mountain range of Snowdonia, North Wales) at that particular time. The roman numerals in the seven titles refer to the date the field recording was made, often pretty wild and wet circumstances but sometimes also peaceful and serene. Moreover, the harsh and remote environmental conditions reflect in the organic, slow morphing, dense and mysterious-flavored soundscapes, for in the stark spherics “XXVIII” and “XXVI”. All tracks seem to visualize a descent into a glacial and rather gloomy underworld while transforming and evolving gently before the mind’s eye. Like Llyn Y Cwn’s previous works “IV” is for deep ambient adventurers, not for starters. |
