In the last few years, Mike Carss’ music (released through various aliases) has seen more emotional depth aside a stronger sonic narrative or cinematic impact. The 57-minute “Gossamer Wings of Illusion” -exploring the complex world of the mind and how each of us view our existence- is no exception as it draws its listener into a lush expanse of gently shifting sonic drama where an ebb and flow of texture maps lead way. On top of that, the aural journey unfolding throughout the seven tracks has a profound timeless, almost fluid quality as we traverse through spacious corridors and constellations of hidden worlds across the view. On “Memory Fold” and the intense “Solitude’s Labyrinth”, the virtual orchestra turns melancholic while a profound sense of longing spreads its wings as we travel onward gracious and unhurried through the void. These are simply beautiful and make excellent aural balm to caress the mind and soul. “Temporal Dunes” smooth soaring soundscapes are more present as we head towards the ethereal outro “Vanishing Point. Here, the combo of piano keys and translucent textures evaporates both resolution and loneliness. All in all, “Gossamer Wings of Illusion” makes a well-accomplished, inspiring work of ambient art. Overall rating: between 3,5 and 4 stars. |
