Rich, gothic-like drone tapestries, tribal percussion and symphonic synth textures grace the intoxicating and rather dramatic music of “Arcana Publicata Vilescunt”, the debut release of the German project Nostalgia (aka Mathias Grassow, Rüdiger Gleisberg and Carsten Agthe). Composed and performed between 1999 and 2001, the outcome is a peculiar and slightly psychedelic journey of song-oriented tunes through smooth pulsating and at times (Berliner School) sequenced sonic landscapes, complimented with a tiny portion of experimental electronica and tribal elements. The mesmerizing “Resurgo” and the 10-minute “Faustus Spiritus”, both found in the centre of the release, are the best exercises in my opinion. All in all, the expansive and overall active nature of “Arcana Publicata Vilescunt”, a sonic alchemy between classical electronics, chill-out and ethno styles, is recommended if you enjoy the works of e.g. Solitaire and Dead Can Dance. |
