Johan De Paepe’s music is sensitive, tender, and emotive throughout, stirring quite some inner emotions, for me anyway. The outcome of his third album “State of Mind” is no exception, inviting the listener on a cinematic journey to contemplate and reflect on the state of the world and the declining state of the natural environment in particular. It again is a great joy to listen to the recording’s perfectly balanced, almost floating sound creations rounded out by excellent production and mastering. The eight tracks feature gentle ambient soundscapes and warm textures rooted in Berlin School mode along several nice melodic nods, all executed in a gentle atmospheric, dreamy, almost intrinsic-narrative fashion. “Varanasi”, co-composed with Cousin Silas, is a lovely, imaginary track that can sit easily next to work from Mind over Matter’s Indian-inspired music. Only the final piece, the 12-minute “The Blue Planet”, features some gentle sequencing complementing the captivating sound canvas. Well done, Johan! |
