After being out of sight for quiet some years (except being a contributor to Steve Roach’s concept cd “The Ambient Expanse”), composer and multi-instrumentalist Patrick O’Hearn shows up again with a new, privately released album. In contrast to the overall electronic works on Private Music and Deep Cave Records, “So Flows the Current” (the title is actually a metaphor of growth and the cycles of life to Patrick) shows a more maturing sound in comparison to his previous recordings. In addition, it has more signs of an acoustic album as the mesmerizing synth-sounds have moved to the background. Next to the characteristic light piano playing and beautiful accompanying bass-chords, lots of shakers and some acoustic guitar have entered the stage, and even a cellist is heard on one track. Overall, the “live-played” music radiates honest emotions, peacefulness and pleasant intimacy, with an occasional flair of melancholy (as heard in “Like so much lost time”). |
