Remy Stroomer and Peter Dekker were part of the select group of musicians who had the opportunity to perform at Bas Broekhuis BYSS studio during the 2020 pandemic. On that December evening, the two played together in public for the first time with a 1,5 hour set of music that now sees the light of day in edited form. The 78-minute outcome blends the influences and visions of both musicians into a non-prepared improvisation live session that was streamed online simultaneously. Well, expect a lot of warm, moody synth sounds along with some accompanying sequencer parts, solo voices, and sound effects. Despite not something that new or particularly captivating is on offer here, the result also lacks the shortcomings of improv on certain passages, especially on the longer pieces. All in all, “Live at Byss” features an assemblage of contemporary as well as classic-infused electronic music with a distinct classical touch as well as some deep drums entering the stage on the fourth track. Rating: between 3 and 3.5 stars. |
