Rhea – Luminescent Ties
CD/DIGITAL DOWNLOAD, Private Release, 2024

“Luminescent Ties” was born out of a collaborative project of Mark de Wit (aka Rhea) with Belgian glass artist Stijn Wuyts. For his summer exhibition and installation ‘Uranium Capsule’, Mark made five 5-minute tracks (the “Isotope” pieces)  that visitors could listen to with headphones. During the last day of this exhibition, the ‘Finissage’, in the church of the Great Elisabeth Beguinage in Ghent, Mr de Wit played two hours of live background music, where people gathered around him on the floor to listen to the music reverberating through the church. It was from this live music, among others, that the rest of the album’s tracks emerged, as well as a collaboration with composer Philippe Wauman (aka Anantakara) with whom Mark is currently working on another release.

The 10-track, almost 72-minute recording creates an intrinsic, minimal soundscape ambience with a profound otherworldly angle, an unhurried (drone) space where textures and assorted elements float weightless, transform and progress gently, occasionally in subtle movement. The darker, haunting spheres are also addressed, like on “Isotope-235”.

The longer pieces on “Luminescent Ties” turn out hallucinogenic, cosmic, and slightly abstract (“Shining Phantoms”, “Cosmic Radiance”). Here we touch voids in an alternate reality where vast worlds are shifting and the listener encounters realms of mysterious, estranged space.

All in all, deep listening is required to get the most out of the outcome, as is patience and headphone listening.
