It has been a long wait, it actually took Rob nearly 20 years to launch this follow-up album to “Daydreamer”. So what a surprise it was to see this talented Dutch synthesist, sound designer & developer of software for virtual instruments present a couple of audio snapshots of this newbie at E-Day 2023, ending up in a full-fletched album on E-Live 2023 that fall. The 60-minute/13-track “Waiting” features a well-tempered contemporary synth sound with melodic hooks all along containing subtle references to Papen’s examples Jean-Michel Jarre and Klaus Schulze, while the subdued and emotionally charged piano tracks found at the end line up nicely to Vangelis. Electronic highlights are “The Chase”, SpaceFloat/Spacefloat Journey, “At Ease” and “Jubilee” (originally a piano composition). “Waiting” rounds out with three bonus tracks, pure, moody, and highly emotive piano-only compositions that (for me at least) kept resonating in my head in a lovely, intimate sense. This applied especially to the final piece “Leaves”. Nice going, Rob! |
