Let me be clear about this recording: there’s nothing surprising nor exciting about the outcome making up Mr. Schroeder’s “Observer”, his 46th regular release if I’m not mistaken. The 10-track, 66-minute release is a work of ambient chill-out electronica featuring Robert’s known sonic footprints and characteristics. Some pieces are more rhythmic and upbeat than others with bits of obvious melody or solo voices on top, but nothing that truly caught my ears as it all presents itself as too easygoing. And of course, there are (rather bland) hints of Berlin School floating through its spacy sound design. Rest me saying this album won’t disappoint if his back catalogue is up your alley, but for me, it all sounds too average from start to finish. I tended to give it 2.5 stars initially, but “Observer’s” mid-section made me settle it to 3 stars. |
