CD, Oasis/Mirage, 1996

“The Silent Shore” is an album of US-composer Robert Scott Thompson, who is associate professor at Georgia State University, School of Music.

His electro-acoustic music, split in three separate “modules”, features a darker type of atmospheric ambient. It’s free form, highly textural and slow morphing in nature with occasional use of rhythm/percussion. But it is also rather restless in spite of being smooth, as there’s an experimental thread almost constantly running underneath each of the 15 compositions.

Despite its contemplative, dreamy and imaginative character, the “active” and unusual character of the deep and mysterious soundscapes making up “The Silent Shore” might also put off quite some ambient fans who were expecting more cohesiveness and harmony.
Have a listen to it though when you like to hear ambient musings in the tradition of Brian Eno, Robert Rich or Steve Roach, but executed with a twist.
