After Ron Boots, Skoulaman was another electronic musician who found his way to Bas Broekhuis’ Byss Studio during the Covid lockdown. Despite the latter troubled situation, this live album finds Hans van Kroonenburg in very good and inspired spirits, resulting in a lovely display of sensitive, cosmic-infused Berlin School music. The strings of (Schulzian-style) sequences are slow and sparkling and surrounded by warm, caressing tapestries, attentively layered soundscapes along some brief solo bits as well as some very nice, gentle synth work reminiscent of classic Vangelis. The latter culminates on the emotive, 15-minute moodscape gem “Polymodish”. “Byssed” ends with the 13-minute studio rehearsal “Sheltered by a flash of rays” where all previously mentioned sonic elements merge sophisticatedly and cohesively. This is comforting sonic food spreading a sense of hope as well as easing the mind. Overall rating: between 3.5 and 4 stars. |
