Soft Note is a textural ambient project by Siberian composer Philipp Kalchuk, created with hard and software synthesizers. The 46-minute “Music Book Vol. 2” is an rather unpolished soundscape journey with an overall raw/adventurous edge were quite a bit of experimentation is going on. In this regard, Mr Kalchuk likes to refer to futuristic soundscapes, a battlefield where light and darkness meet. There’s a distinct active mode found in Soft Note’s smooth shifting and curling textural worlds, while the freeform outcome also reveals dreamy, mesmerizing and surreal sonic layers. “Ancient Jungles” is the most harmonic take on this release, while most of the others drift off into abstract paintings or feature strange sound phenomena. But the second half of the album is hard to endure.“Corrupted Horizons” (08:49) for sure is the thoughest and most harsh piece on this peculiar release, followed by the alienating “Abandoned Spaceship” and “Energy Core”. This is absolutely not for the faint of heart nor my cup of (ambient)tea. “Music Book Vol. 2” is available for free as (24-bit) download from Soft Note’s Bandcamp site. |
