With the deluge of releases abroad, you would regularly forget that sometimes interesting music is also made close to home. What about SCD alias Boele Gerkes from Zutphen, whom I had never heard of until I saw him live at EMIL 2003. Boele is one of those people who is completely under the spell of analogue gear, but who also knows how to use it very skilfully and scores high marks in playing technique. “The Last Gate” is SCD´s third CD, a disc that sounds musically very original and challenging right from the start, and makes you marvel at the beautiful sounds that are conjured up here. Melody, rhythms and sequencers are very ingeniously forged together, sometimes reminding me of Spyra, but with a considerable wink. In the 11 compelling compositions, you gradually discern the enormous drive and pleasure of the creator in creating them. Personally, I experienced “Marathon 1” and “Marathon 2”, “Spirit” and “Exponential Distaster” as my favourites, but the other eight tracks of the more than 78-minute-long recording are no less impressive. As far as I’m concerned, it’s highly recommended and also has excellent production and sound engineering. |
