Spyra – Tau
CD, Private Release, 2024

“Tau”, launched at Spyra’s „Hello 2025“ live event at Planetarium Bochum on 30.12.2024, is the final part of the trilogy “Staub” (2014) and “Dunst” (2018). Its sound is recognizable immediately as Spyra with fresh contemporary sounds blending his sonic ideas with beats and classic Berlin School soundscapes/sequencer music.

The biggest part of the release, all recorded in Wolfram’s home studio, actually makes up an extended, continuously evolving and shapeshifting piece of music -including a few quirky bits and twists- where echoes from classic Schulze (and “Mirage’s” composition “Crystal Lake” in particular on the third take “Rhodes Intermezzo”) shine through without mimicking them that much. The varied outcome evokes enchanting, cool, and dreamy realms, demonstrating how Wolfram has been able to refine and cultivate his own distinctive approach to classical electronic music through the years and transport it confidently in the here and now. This said, I’m still not fond nor can I get used to the vocal contributions of Spyra’s wife Roksana on the sixth track “Neumann Etude”. “Radar live”, which rounds out the 73-minute album, is a live recording that was recorded at Spyra’s concert at the RadarVision Festival 2022.
