Steve Roach – Alive in the Vortex

“Alive in the Vortex” is another addition in the (ongoing?) series of live recordings which Steve Roach has (re-)discovered, this one focusing initially on expanded textural atmospherics with some high-tech sequencer stuff and tribal style coming alongside as the recording progresses.

The album features eight lengthy, untitled tracks containing loads of sample food, presenting the complete concert of October 26, 2013 in Los Angeles, containing no edits, overdubs or studio enhancements.

The outcome is a nice, mesmerizing and deep listen, but at the same time it struck me most of the time there’s nothing special in here that differentiates of stuff already featured in Steve’s vast catalogue.
So does “Alive in the Vortex” (a double cd as a physical album) and the composer thread water and not getting anywhere?
