During his musical career, ambient master Steve Roach once in a while always kept returning to the fusion of electronics with tribal/organic elements. With Byron Metcalf, he made his first collaborative effort “The Serpent’s Lair” in 2000 that hereby gets a follow-up. The 74-minute “Tales from the Ultra Tribe” showcases their trance-groove style of music is further shaped and deepened by high-technology of the last decade while its foundations remain firmly connected to an electro-organic core. The seamless, multi-dimensional and at times minimal sounding outcome integrates a whole assortment of percussion instruments and drums with groovy sequencers, samples, hybrid grooves and spacious pads to hypnotic/mind-expanding effect, while journeying straight-forward through various tempi. “Tales from the Ultra Tribe” is contemporary shaman-music connecting to the primordial with pulsating vibes and a passionate intensity running underneath. |
