Steve Roach – Reflections in Repose
CD/DIGITAL DOWNLOAD, Projekt Records, 2024

The music of “Reflections in Repose” returns to the realm where Steve’s classic “Structures from Silence” was born, offering five long-form textural ambient pieces with the intention and flow to merge into the space where the title track of the classic recording saw the light of day.

To record this other sanctuary of quiet, Roach used one instrument, the Oberheim OB-X8 (the modern equivalent of the iconic Oberheim OB-8 he used some 40 years back). So expect lots of warm, floating organic pads executed in Steve’s signature blend of minimalism and complexity merged with long, lush, and detailed reverb techniques, as such allowing for reflection and contemplation. The final piece, the 15-minute “This is Why”, sees a beautiful culmination of the soothing and calm, or what the promo blurb pinpoints as an intimate embrace of silence, breath, and rich harmonic inventiveness. Overall, “Reflections in Repose” can’t top the sound and impact of the 1984 recording, which may have to do with the difference between the OB-8 and the OB-X8, but the lovely closing track comes very close.

Rating: between 3.5 and 4 stars.
