“The Passing” (a surprise birthday present from Steve to all his fans in February 2017) is a 60-minute contemplation on human life of which the first seeds go back to the late ‘90’s. It contains one longform piece of highly emotive ambient soundscapes and deep atmospheric textures where Steve shows his mastered expertise in building profound atmospheres and riding the ambient waves. The listener will encounter various (under)currents such as hope, melancholy, despair, sadness and longing beyond blissful moments. At times the introspective, pure ambient, soft glow, embracing qualities and smooth swirling movements of “Sigh of Ages” and “Arc of Passion” come to mind. I feel the first 20 minutes of the sonic drift travelling inward are darker shaded, from there a more uplifting, shinier tone starts to bloom gradually along an overall weightless and effortless sense of being. I had the impression Steve’s career started to fade gradually the last 1,5 decade, but the excellent, thought-provoking and heart-felt outcome of “The Passing” (a plain invitation for full immersion I reckon) proves me wrong.
