Yanni – Keys To Imagination

This instrumental album is the debut release of Greek-born American musician Yanni (aka Yiannis Hrysomallis) on Peter Baumann’s Private music label.

Although clocking at only 38 minutes, the cd offers eight classical-edged tracks featuring some appealing compositions, melodies, elaborate cross-rhythms, and a dash of romantic flavours.

Despite starting out in a contemplative mood, “Keys to Imagination” soon sees Yanni treat his gear as a dynamic electronic/symphonic orchestra, creating atmospheres of drama and imaginative scenery.
Great pieces are “Nostalgia” and “Santorini” or the smooth and moody “Port of Mystery”, beside the sweeping, Middle Eastern-angled title track and the finale “Forbidden Dreams”.

All in all, “Keys to Imagination” remains a solid and appealing effort until this very day, despite a few sound pads sounding a bit outdated. It’s a pity though he soon after went up the commercial/easy-listening alley…
